From the desk of Bob Smith...

Webster's Dictionary defines the word ‘path’ as a track specially constructed for a particular use. On Sunday, September 29th at 3pm that definition will certainly hold true in Huntington as thousands of people gather to participate in PATH to the Cure 2013 or #p2c2013 as the ‘hipsters’ say. It's all a part of the continuing battle against Breast Cancer but more focused on prevention, health and wellness in our community.

The desire of P2C organizers is that all of us become PathFinders, together discovering a way to prevent this dreaded disease. As an extra incentive to share in this experience, Country Western Music Superstar and “Dancing with the Stars” Champion, Kellie Pickler will be on hand to perform at the Big Sandy Superstore Arena following the 5K walk/run. And by the way, people who participate in the 5K will enjoy free admission to the concert. There is not a single person alive today that hasn't been touched in some way by cancer. My wife, Billie, had her own battle with breast cancer at the age of 40. The disease had progressed to stage two invading surrounding tissues. After a modified radical mastectomy, Billie underwent six months of chemotherapy which involved a treatment every three weeks. She was pronounced cancer free after the treatment. Twenty-six years later Billie was diagnosed with late stage Ovarian Cancer. Two years after that, Billie is again cancer free and doing great. Others have not been so fortunate as the struggle to find a cure continues.

Make plans now to get involved in some way. Remember, 100 percent of the money raised will stay in Huntington for breast cancer prevention by assisting people to get mammograms who are underinsured or uninsured. A portion of the proceeds also benefits the PATH - Paul Ambrose Trail for Health. Last year 1,800 people took a giant leap and helped raise $70,000. This year the goal is $100,000. Register today at www.pathtothecure.org. The lives saved through your efforts will be immeasurable.

By the way, Billie and I will be walking with Team Advantage Toyota, one of the corporate sponsors for the event. Stay tuned to hear about who we are walking for and why…and as we reveal our really great team shirts. We look forward to seeing you on the 29th!
