Toyota Launches National Program to Expand Efforts to Help Schools, Hospitals and Community Organizations Make the Most of Every Dollar

At Clinton Global Initiative Meeting, the Company Announces It Is Donating Toyota Production System Expertise to Benefit Up to 20 Organizations in the First Year

Initial Project to Focus on New Orleans Nonprofit That Expects Toyota Techniques to Help It Accelerate Post-Katrina Rebuilding

June 29, 2011 – Chicago, Ill. – Toyota today announced the launch of a national program to donate its Toyota Production System (TPS) expertise to help schools, hospitals and nonprofits improve their operations, extend their reach and increase their impact. The company will be working with up to 20 community organizations across the United States in the first year to help improve performance, beginning with the St. Bernard Project, a New Orleans recovery organization that employs returning war veterans, AmeriCorps members and volunteers to rebuild homes devastated by Hurricane Katrina.

Toyota’s announcement was made at the opening of the inaugural CGI America meeting in Chicago, a Clinton Global Initiative undertaking that is focused on creating U.S. jobs and driving economic growth.

Yoshimi Inaba, President and COO of Toyota Motor North America, Inc., said: “At Toyota, we judge our success not just on the cars we make, but also on how many people we help and communities we support.  In today’s challenging economy, non-profits across the U.S. are under increasing pressure to provide more services for more people – with fewer resources.   By sharing the techniques of the Toyota Production System, we hope to help these vital organizations increase productivity and efficiency, while decreasing costs and retaining jobs.  We are pleased to extend this support – which has been a long-standing resource for successful for-profit companies across North America – to organizations that help people most in need.”

The St. Bernard Project (SBP) has rebuilt more than 380 homes in the New Orleans area and created innovative job training and employment opportunities for returning war veterans. The organization expects that what it learns from Toyota regarding efficiency and productivity improvements will enable it to accelerate its rebuilding efforts by 20 percent, train and employ three times as many war veterans and make more effective use of the more than 60 AmeriCorps members and 200 civilian volunteers dedicated each day to building and rebuilding housing for Katrina survivors.

SBP CEO and Co-Founder Zack Rosenburg said: “In disaster recovery, time matters. We are confident that Toyota’s expertise will help us not only expedite recovery efforts in New Orleans, but also allow us to replicate our vertically integrated rebuilding model in Joplin, Mo., Tuscaloosa, Ala., and other areas of the country devastated by recent natural disasters.”

Toyota’s initiative to support community organizations is being led by the Toyota Production System Support Center (TSSC), which was originally established in 1992 to give back to North America by sharing the techniques of the Toyota Production System with Toyota-related suppliers and other companies nationwide. TSSC’s work is focused on helping to make

substantial improvements by increasing productivity, safety and quality and decreasing costs, always with a unique focus on ensuring job retention. A sought after resource for some of America’s most successful for-profit companies, TSSC’s expertise is now being made available more broadly to nonprofits and other community organizations.

Toyota also announced today that TSSC will now operate as a not-for-profit entity.

Techniques Pioneered on Toyota’s Auto Assembly Lines Having a Substantial Impact at Community Organizations

TSSC pilot projects have already demonstrated the many ways in which concepts pioneered on Toyota’s automobile assembly lines can benefit a wide array of nonprofit and community organizations.  For example:

  • Long wait times at the Community Kitchen & Food Pantry in Harlem (part of the Food Bank for New York City) were reduced from more than an hour to just 18 minutes by improving processes in meal services; and
  • At Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh, applying Toyota’s renowned “just in time” supply process to the delivery of pharmacy supplies dramatically cut down on waste and is projected to save the hospital $391,000 per year.
Daryl Foriest, Director of Meal Services at the Kitchen & Food Pantry of West Harlem, noted: “The financial assistance we receive from our generous donors allows us to continue to serve our customers, but Toyota’s process training allows us to serve them better. Working with Toyota, we were able to reduce the wait time for a meal, customize meals for customers to eliminate unwanted food options, and with an accelerated service time, we no longer need to devote resources managing long lines.  This is a system we can use at soup kitchens across New York City.”

Diane Frndak, Corporate Vice President of Safety and Quality at Allegheny General Hospital, said: "Not only did the new system Toyota helped us develop eliminate waste and improve quality, it also streamlined the workload for the pharmacy and nursing staff. With the new system in place, our nurses are now able to spend more time with patients."

St. Bernard Project’s Zack Rosenburg added: “Toyota is uniquely qualified to offer these types of services, which can be ‘game changers’ for pioneering nonprofits like the St. Bernard Project.  Rarely do you see a company give away this type of expertise.”

Toyota’s commitment also builds on its long-standing focus on supporting local communities. Over the past 20 years, the company has donated more than half a billion dollars to nonprofit organizations across the U.S.

After Earthquake and Tsunami in Japan, North American Toyota Production Expected to Reach 100 Percent in September

Parts Recovery Is Earlier Than Anticipated

ERLANGER, Ky. (June 16, 2011)North American vehicle production levels are expected to return to 100 percent in September, Toyota said today. Production is recovering earlier than originally anticipated following the March 11 earthquake and tsunami in Japan.

On average, current production has improved to more than 80 percent through August. Eight of the company’s 12 North American-built models returned to 100 percent production on June 6.

“After September we will focus on making-up lost production as much as possible,” said Steve St. Angelo, executive vice president of Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing, North America. “Our team members and suppliers here and in Japan have worked tirelessly to get us back to 100 percent, overcoming many challenges. The effort in Japan has been incredible, especially in the midst of such tragedy and devastation.”

Bob Carter, group vice president and Toyota Division general manager, Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A., Inc., said, "The rapid production recovery proves once again that Toyota's manufacturing team members in North America and around the world are the best in the business." Carter added, "Thanks to their efforts, our dealers have a healthy supply of cars and trucks available to sell, with more arriving every day, along with competitive lease and APR programs for our customers."

Bourboursville Police Officer finds release in writing about his son’s difficulties. Check out this touching article about one of our own!

HUNTINGTON — The inspiration for Greg Lucas’ book was desperation. The Barboursville police officer and father of four chronicles his experiences raising a severely disabled son with wife of 22 years, Kim, in “Wrestling with an Angel.” “I always tell people the book was not created out of inspiration as much as it was born out of desperation,” said Lucas, father to Jacob, 17; Noah, 16; Aaron, 15; and Hope, 5. All of the Lucas’ children are adopted. Jake lives with numerous mental and physical disabilities, including autism and cerebral palsy. He functions on the cognitive level of a 2-year-old. “The writing began as a personal journal, which served as my temporary escape for dealing with the difficulties of raising my severely disabled son. I used to lock myself in my study and vent in writing.

“Eventually, I discovered that by thinking through some of the most painful moments and writing about them, I was able to step back and see the bigger picture of what was really going on,” he continued. “And, in that bigger picture, I was able to see God’s grace in all of the difficulty and pain.” The journal, he said, morphed into a public blog — sheepdogger.blogspot.com — where he encountered thousands of hurt people experiencing the same challenges as his family. Through the blog, Lucas was contacted by relatively new publishing company Cruciform Press and asked to submit a manuscript for consideration. “Wrestling with an Angel” was born, giving Lucas a new venue in which to chronicle the day-to-day challenges of dealing with a special needs child. “One difficult morning, I came into Jake’ s room to wake him up and get him ready for his day and, as usual, he was very combative. He was covered in feces and urine and we went through the typical fight and physical struggle to get him cleaned up. While I was trying to get him clean, he kicked me in the face and bloodied my lip,” Lucas recalled. “In reaction, I just sat back on the floor and began grumbling at God for all of Jake’ s disabilities, wondering why God would allow this to take place and why Jake would not let me take care of him. I was willing and wanting to meet all of Jake’s needs.” In his frustration, Lucas said he learned a valuable lesson. “There on the bedroom floor in the midst of feces, urine, blood, sweat and tears, God displayed to me, in the most gentle way, how much He had loved me and how willing He was to care for me,” he said. Lucas crawled across the floor to his son. “While he continued to fight me, I simply held him and whispered in his ear, ‘I love you, I love you, I love you ... no matter what,’” he said. “That one incident became an incredible, lasting illustration of God’s grace in my sinful life.” Lucas said he hopes the book speaks not only to families dealing with the challenges of disability, but families who have never been affected by the stress of physical or mental disability. “It is a book about coming to the end of your rope, the end of your strength, the end of your understanding and finding that God’s grace really is enough,” he said. “Wrestling with an Angel” is available online at cruciformpress.com or amazon.com and locally at Empire Books and News at Pullman Square.

Check out the facts about Smart Stop Technology!

As an added measure of safety, Toyota created the braking system enhancement known as Smart Stop Technology. This advanced technology automatically reduces engine power when both pedals are pressed at the same time under certain conditions.

Smart Stop Technology intervenes when the accelerator is depressed first and the brakes are applied firmly for longer than one-half second at speeds greater than five miles per hour.

In normal driving conditions, you won’t notice Smart Stop Technology as it is imperceptible. The feature doesn’t engage if the brake pedal is depressed before the accelerator pedal. This allows for vehicles starting on a steep hill to safely accelerate without rolling backward (known as hill start).

Toyota will install Smart Stop Technology in all new models by the end of 2010, making it one of the first full-line manufacturers to offer this braking technology as standard equiptment.
